Irum Taqi is the Director of Global Policy at the Guttmacher Institute. She leads strategic efforts to advance comprehensive sexual and reproductive health and rights policies globally. Ms. Taqi joined the Institute in 2022 and previously served as Principal Advisor, Global Policy and Interim Director of Global and Federal Policy.
Ms. Taqi has extensive experience in SRHR policy and advocacy, both globally and in the U.S. Prior to joining the Institute, she led global initiatives at the United Nations for nine years to strengthen political support for SRHR, maternal health, and gender equality in the Global South, resulting in successful policy changes. Earlier in her career, she advocated for supportive laws and policies in the U.S. at organizations including Physicians for Reproductive Health, the Center for Reproductive Rights, and the New York Civil Liberties Union. Ms. Taqi built partnerships, developed organizational positions, lobbied policymakers, and delivered expert testimony in support of legislation expanding access to sexual and reproductive health care. She also previously served as Deputy General Counsel to the New York City Public Advocate.
Ms. Taqi received her J.D. from Fordham University School of Law and B.A. from Vassar College.
