Jonathan Wittenberg joined the Guttmacher Institute in 2005. He is currently serving as Acting Co-CEO. In his role as Executive Vice President, Mr. Wittenberg works to align the organization’s strategy and operations, ensure cross-divisional collaboration and integration, and institute leading practices in project management. In 2022, he co-led an initiative to design the Institute’s strategic response to the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision, and he has co-authored op-eds about the role of philanthropy in responding to the crisis brought on by the Court’s ruling. Prior to becoming Executive Vice President in 2019, Mr. Wittenberg led the Institute’s fundraising efforts, first as Director of Development (2007–2013) and then as Vice President for Development (2013–2019). In these roles, he oversaw a period of major growth in the organization’s funding from private foundations, government agencies and individual donors. From 2018 to 2019, he served as the Institute’s interim CEO.
Prior to joining Guttmacher, Mr. Wittenberg was the program associate for International Health Policy at the Commonwealth Fund, where he conducted policy analysis and helped support the Fund’s grantees. In 2003, he worked as a public policy intern for Physicians for Reproductive Health (then known as Physicians for Reproductive Choice and Health). Mr. Wittenberg received a BS in health sciences from James Madison University and an MPH from the Yale School of Public Health. He served for many years on the board of directors of the Abortion Liberation Fund of Philadelphia, for which he remains a volunteer and supporter.
