Maibe Ponet joined the Guttmacher Institute in 2019. As Vice President for Communications & Publications, she provides oversight and strategic direction to the Institute’s media outreach, web and social media content, and publications, including the peer-reviewed journals. Ms. Ponet has more than 20 years’ experience in strategic communications, media relations, public affairs, journalism and marketing.
Prior to coming to the Institute, Ms. Ponet held several leadership positions at the New York City Mayor’s Office, including Deputy Communications Director and top communications adviser to the Mayor and Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services. She also served as Chief Communications Officer for the NYC Health Department, Senior Communications Advisor to the NYC Health Commissioner, Deputy Press Secretary to the NYC Mayor, Press Secretary to the NYC Public Advocate, Press Secretary at the Manhattan Borough President’s Office and Deputy Press Secretary at the NYC Department of Education. In addition, Ms. Ponet worked as a reporter and editor for several publications, including serving as chief opinion and editorial editor for El Diario-La Prensa, the main Spanish-language daily in New York City. She holds a BA in journalism from the Universidad Central de Venezuela and an MS in urban policy analysis and management from The New School.
